During the 74th U.N. General Assembly, Devex will host a series of events exploring different roads to making progress on Universal Health Coverage at the "Devex UHC Pavilion". This full day of programming will serve as a hub for our reporters and global health content. The UHC Pavilion is taking place the day after the High-level Meeting on UHC and will capitalize on the momentum and outcomes from that discussion, with many themes being well-positioned to segue into the High-level Dialogue on Financing for Development the following day.

The Devex UHC Pavilion will create a springboard for collaboration and collective action to advance crucial conversations covering a wide range of topics, all of which will explore UHC through different lenses.

Funding the Future 2.0: The next frontier for financing models in health

This session will convene a group of thought leaders and practitioners to discuss the next frontier for development finance by evaluating what we’ve learned about the current landscape and identifying the steps forward. The conversation will focus on catalyzing ways to promote donor engagement and government participation in an effort to accelerate the partnerships and financing needed to move the needle on maternal health. Going Digital: Creating enabling ecosystems for digital health

While there are numerous digital health solutions, many of them are fragmented and lack interoperability. How can we ensure such efforts are streamlined to produce the best possible health outcomes? During this event, we’ll go beyond discussing the possibilities of digital health tools to further explore what it takes to create a practical enabling environment – including the right regulatory frameworks, infrastructure, and partnerships – to ensure digital tools drive progress on UHC. Investing in a qualified health workforce is key in supporting healthy populations and prosperous economies. SDG 3 aims to ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all — and guaranteeing access to quality, accessible, and affordable eye care services is instrumental in helping advance this goal. We’ll discuss how we can overcome obstacles to meeting the 2050 target of universal vision, highlight the need for specific funding, and explore the role of partnerships, awareness raising, and how we can — jointly — tackle the issue through economies of scale and cross-sector collaboration. Gunilla Carlsson

UNAIDS Executive Director, a.i. and Deputy Executive Director, Management and Governance

Gunilla Carlsson was appointed as UNAIDS Executive Director, a.i. in May 2019. She joined UNAIDS in February 2018 as the Deputy Executive Director for Management and Governance and Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations. She leads UNAIDS’ work in promoting effective governance of the Joint Programme and provides strategic direction to management functions in the areas of human resources, finance and budget, information and communication technology and administration in order to enhance UNAIDS’ capacity to implement its mandate and vision.

Steve Davis

President & CEO, PATH

Steve Davis is president and chief executive officer of PATH. Combining expertise as a technology business leader, global health advocate, and social innovator, he has led PATH’s growth and evolution into a leading social enterprise advancing health solutions across the globe. Before joining PATH in 2012, Mr. Davis served as Director of Social Innovation at McKinsey & Company, Interim CEO of the Infectious Disease Research Institute, CEO of global digital media firm Corbis, and practiced law at the international law firm K&L Gates. Earlier in his career, he worked on Chinese politics and law, and refugee programs and policies.

Stefan Germann

CEO, Fondation Botnar

Stefan is the Chief Executive Officer of Fondation Botnar, a Swiss-based foundation which champions the use of artificial intelligence (AI) and digital technology to improve the health and wellbeing of children and young people in growing urban environments. He is a global child health and wellbeing expert with over 30 years’ experience - living in 7 and working in over 80 countries with the single passion of the progressive realisation of children’s rights. He started up several social development organisations and programs in Africa and Asia (Masiye Camp, REPSSI, One Goal Asia). As a leadership principle Stefan believes that “Leadership is not about being in charge. Leadership is about taking care of those in your charge (Simon Sinek)”.

H.E. Dr. Amir Aman Hagos

Minister of Health, Ethiopia

H.E. Dr. Amir Aman Hagos is the Minister of Health (MOH) of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia. A physician by training,with a master’s degree in public health, he is a dedicated public health professional and has served as a medical practitioner in a primary hospital in a small town of Oromia Regional state. Prior to his appointment as Minister, he served as Director General of Policy and Planning Directorate and Director of Human Resources Directorate, and was finally serving as State Minister of Health in MOH. During his tenure, he has successfully increased the mobilization of human and financial resources, ensuring the effective implementation of the MOH’s five-year health development plan and is now spearheading the health sector transformation plan.

Katja Iversen

President & CEO, Women Deliver

Katja Iversen is the President/CEO of Women Deliver – a leading global advocate for investment in gender equality and the health and rights of girls and women, with a specific focus on maternal, sexual and reproductive health and rights. Iversen, an internationally recognized expert on development, advocacy and communications, has more than 25 years of experience working in NGOs, corporates and United Nation agencies. Previously, she held the position as Chief of Strategic Communication and Public Advocacy with UNICEF, a position she came to after almost six years of leading the team responsible for advocacy and communication on reproductive health with UNFPA.

Dr. Serge Resnikoff

Global Health Eye Expert

Prof. Resnikoff is an international expert in global public health, ophthalmology, and eye health. He is a visiting professor at the University of New South Wales and a faculty member at the University of Geneva, Switzerland, and of the Universities of Lyon and Paris, France. He also is the President of International Health and Development and the President and Chair of Organisation pour la Prévention de la Cécité (OPC), a nongovernmental organization that is active in the prevention of blindness in francophone Africa.

Peter Sands

Executive Director, The Global Fund

Peter Sands became the Executive Director of the Global Fund in March 2018. As former Chief Executive Officer of Standard Chartered PLC, one of the world’s leading international banks, Sands has been a research fellow at Harvard University since 2015, dividing his time between the Mossavar-Rahmani Center for Business and Government at Harvard Kennedy School and the Harvard Global Health Institute, working on a range of research projects in financial markets and regulation, fintech and global health.
