On the sidelines of the 2019 United Nations General Assembly, Devex is convening a group of global health thought leaders to host an important conversation on gender equality and universal health coverage.

This event, underwritten by Pathfinder International, will feature a high-level conversation with Devex senior reporter Adva Saldinger, Executive Director of UNAIDS Gunilla Carlsson, and Katja Iversen, CEO of Women Deliver. The conversation will highlight the importance of ensuring women and girls — and their sexual and reproductive health and rights — are included in the path to health care for all.

Gunilla Carlsson

UNAIDS Executive Director, a.i. and Deputy Executive Director, Management and Governance

Gunilla Carlsson was appointed as UNAIDS Executive Director, a.i. in May 2019. She joined UNAIDS in February 2018 as the Deputy Executive Director for Management and Governance and Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations. She leads UNAIDS’ work in promoting effective governance of the Joint Programme and provides strategic direction to management functions in the areas of human resources, finance and budget, information and communication technology and administration in order to enhance UNAIDS’ capacity to implement its mandate and vision.

Katja Iversen

President & CEO, Women Deliver

Katja Iversen is the President/CEO of Women Deliver – a leading global advocate for investment in gender equality and the health and rights of girls and women, with a specific focus on maternal, sexual and reproductive health and rights. Iversen, an internationally recognized expert on development, advocacy and communications, has more than 25 years of experience working in NGOs, corporates and United Nation agencies. Previously, she held the position as Chief of Strategic Communication and Public Advocacy with UNICEF, a position she came to after almost six years of leading the team responsible for advocacy and communication on reproductive health with UNFPA.

Murtala Mai

Senior Program Director, United States, Pathfinder

Murtala Mai is a senior program director at Pathfinder. He joined our team in 2002 as the project manager of our Private Sector Family Planning & Reproductive Health project in Northern Nigeria. He then served as our country representative in Nigeria and Ghana before moving to the United States and joining the Evidence to Action Project as the senior technical advisor for community-based services. In 2014, he transitioned to the role of E2A’s director of field support and in 2016, he accepted the role of senior program director.

Adva Saldinger

Associate Editor and Senior Reporter, Devex

Adva Saldinger is an Associate Editor at Devex, where she covers the intersection of business and international development, as well as U.S. foreign aid policy. From partnerships to trade and social entrepreneurship to impact investing, Adva explores the role the private sector and private capital play in development. A journalist with more than 10 years of experience, she has worked at several newspapers in the U.S. and lived in both Ghana and South Africa.
