Now, after two turbulent years, the U.K. government's delayed development strategy is finally out, signaling a fundamental shift in how one of the world's biggest bilateral donors approaches aid.

What does it mean in practical terms, and what does it say about the U.K.’s stance on international development?

Prior to joining Bond, Abigael worked as a humanitarian policy advisor and regional research and policy coordinator for Oxfam. From 2018-2020 she co-chaired the GAPS policy working group on women, peace and security. She also spent a year with the Cash Learning Partnership as research and knowledge management coordinator. Before joining the international development sector, Abigael spent several years researching the impact of social movements on public policy in the U.K. at the University of Oxford as a doctoral student.

Ranil Dissanayake is an economist with more than 15 years’ experience in international development policy making. He has been a senior adviser to the Governments of Malawi and Tanzania and was a Senior Economic Adviser to successive Chief Economists in the U.K.’s Department for International Development between 2016 and 2020. He currently splits his time between CGD and completing his doctoral research into organisational decision-making at the Blavatnik School of Government (University of Oxford). His work focuses on the future of development cooperation, economic development in poor countries, and bridging the gap between research and policymaking.
