Event Overview

On behalf of the Coalition for Access to NCD Medicines & Products, Devex LIVE hosted an invitation-only event in the lead up to the High-level Meeting on NCDs at the UN General Assembly.

The event aimed to translate the commitments made at the high-level meeting on NCDs into meaningful country action, which will require coordinated effort across sectors, particularly when it comes to realizing access to NCD medicines and products. Attendees heard from leading voices in government, industry, academia, and the non-profit sector on how catalyzing innovations in financing and service delivery are critical to the system strengthening efforts needed to combat NCDs and realize universal health coverage.

Speakers

Rachel Nugent

VP, Global NCDs, RTI International

Nugent, PhD, has more than 30 years of experience in global development as a researcher, practitioner, and policy advisor to governments. She leads a team charged with providing policy analysis, implementation, and evaluation of cost-effective strategies to prevent and control global NCDs. RTI's global NCD experts generate and translate new evidence to help guide global and national decision-making aimed at NCD detection, prevention, and control.

Brenda Waning

Chief, Global Drug Facility, Stop TB Partnership at UNOPS

Dr. Waning is an expert in developing, implementing, and analyzing pharmaceutical policies and market approaches to improve access to medicines and diagnostics in resource-limited settings. Most recently, she was the Coordinator of Market Dynamics at UNITAID where she led efforts related to UNITAID's technical strategy, market assessments, and strategic investments. Prior to joining UNITAID, Brenda server as Director of Pharmaceutical Policy at Boston University School of Medicine. Today, Dr. Waning reports directly to the Stop TB Partnerships' Executive Director Dr. Lucica Ditiu who said "Brenda is an accomplished leader whose experience in developing innovative strategies to address access issues will be an asset to GDF."

Dr. Jane Aceng

Minister of Health, Government of Uganda

Dr. Aceng was appointed as the Minister of Health of Uganda in June 2016. She holds a Bachelor's degree in Medicine (MBChB), MMED (Paediatrics), Masters in Public Health and a Diploma in Public Administration and Management (ongoing). She is a Paediatrics expert and is currently at the level of Senior Consultant Paediatrics. Dr. Aceng has vast experience both as a manager and a practicing medical personnel, which she accumulated while serving in various capacities.

Sir George Alleyne

Director Emeritus, PAHO (Chair)

Sir George A.O. Alleyne obtained his bachelor of medicine and surgery degree from the University of London in 1957 and his M.D. from the same university in 1965. He began a career in academic medicine in 1962 at the University of the West Indies, and was appointed Professor of Medicine in 1972. Dr. Alleyne has served as a member of various bodies, including the Scientific and Technical Advisory Committee of the WHO Tropocal Disease Research Program and the Institute of Medicine Committee on Scientific Investigation in Developing Countries. From 1970 to 1981, Dr. Alleyne served as a member and chair of the PAHO Advisory Committee on Medical Research.

Arnaud Bernaert

Head of Global Health and Healthcare, World Economic Forum

Prior to joining the World Economic Forum as Senior Director of Global Health and Healthcare, Arnaud was Senior VP at Royal Philips in charge of Global Strategy, Business Development, and Mergers & Acquisitions for Philips Healthcare. Formally the Senior VP and CFO for Philips Home Healthcare Solutions, Arnaud joined Philips in 2005 from Baxter Healthcare, where he acted as the European Regional Controller for Baxter $2.5B business. A finance MBA from HEC Paris by education, Arnaud has accumulated more than 20 years of experience in the Healthcare industry.

Katie Dain

CEO, NCD Alliance

Dain is CEO of the NCD Alliance, a global network of civil society organizations dedicated to transforming the fight against NCDs. Katie has worked with the NCD Alliance since its founding in 2009. Katie is widely recognized as a leading advocate and expert on NCDs. She is currently a member of the WHO Independent High-Level Commission of NCDs and co-chair of the WHO Civil Society Working Group on the UN High-Level Meeting on NCDs.

Steve Davis

President and CEO, PATH

Davis is a social innovator and global health problem-solver who has been both a human rights lawyer and internet pioneer. He believes in running PATH as a forward-looking business, and he is dedicated to shifting economic power to countries and people who have for too long been thought of as beneficiaries of global largesse instead of decision-makers and drivers of social change. Before joining PATH, Davis was director of Social Innovation at McKinsey & Company, CEO of the global digital media firm Corbis, and interim director of the Infectious Disease Research Institute.

Tom Frieden

President and CEO, Resolve to Save Lives

Dr. Frieden is one of the world's leading public health experts and the President and CEO of Resolve to Save Lives, a $225 million, 5-year initiative housed at Vital Strategies, a non-profit global health organization working toward the vision that all people are protected by a strong public health system. The Resolve to Save Lives initiative aims to save millions of lives from cardiovascular disease and make the world safer from epidemics. Dr. Frieden was Director of the CDC from 2009 to 2017, and led the CDC work that helped and the Ebola epidemic.

Githinji Gitahi

Group CEO Amref Health Africa

A passionate advocate for a prop-poor Universal Health Coverage, Gitahi joined Amref Health Africa as the Group Chief Executive Officer in June 2015. Amref Health Africa, founded in 1957, is the largest African-led international organization on the continent and reaches more than 11 million people each year through 150 health-focused projects across 35 countries. Dr. Gitahi is Co-Chair of the UHC2030 Steering Committe and member of the Private Sector Advisory Board of Africa CDC and of the World Health Organization's Community Health Worked Hub.

Dr. Kaushik Ramaiya

MD, MMed

Dr. Ramaiya is the Consultant Physician and CEO at Shree Hindu Mandal Hospital, Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Dr. Kaushik Ramaiya is an internationally recognized medical expert on health care systems for infectious and NCDs in Tanzania and sub-Saharan Africa. Dr. Kaushik Ramaiya was the Chair of the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) Africa Region from 2000-2006 and Vice President of the International Diabetes Federation from 2007-2012.
