On the occasion of the 49th World Economic Forum annual meeting, Devex, MSD for Mothers, OPIC, the Global Financing Facility, and Dangote Foundation hosted an intimate gathering on Wednesday, January 23. This high-level panel discussion explored the current landscape of private sector engagement and its involvement in building health development solutions. Our featured speakers took a look at how we can mobilize donor agencies in particular to adopt more of these private sector approaches.

Mariam Claeson

Director, The Global Financing Facility

Mariam Claeson, M.D., M.P.H., is the Director of the Global Financing Facility for Every Woman Every Child at the World Bank. She was previously the Director for the Maternal Newborn and Child Health team at the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation since July 2012. She served as Program Coordinator for AIDS in the South Asia Region of the World Bank (2005- 2012), living three years in India. Before that, she was the Lead Public Health Specialist in the Health, Nutrition and Population, Human Development Network of the World Bank (1998- 2004). Prior to joining the World Bank, Dr. Claeson worked for the Global Program for the Control of Diarrheal Diseases, World Health Organization (1987-1995). She has worked in clinical practice at the rural district level (Tanzania, Bangladesh and Bhutan); in national immunization and diarrheal disease control (Ethiopia 1984-1986); and, for the World Bank in health sector development programs including in Egypt, Jordan, Uzbekistan, China and the Philippines.

Julie Gerberding

Executive Vice President & Chief Patient Officer, Strategic Communications, Global Public Policy and Population Health, Merck

Julie Gerberding has been Executive Vice President and Chief Patent Officer, Strategic Communications, Global Public Policy and Population Health at Merck & Co. since 2016. Prior to this role, Julie was President of Merck Vaccines from 2010-2014, and was Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) from 2002-2009. She also serves as the Co-Chair of the board of directors of Sanofi Pasteur MSD Joint Venture and is an adjunct associate clinical professor of medicine in infectious disease at the University of California, San Francisco.

Ifeyinwa Ugochukwa

Director of Partnerships, Tony Elumelu Foundation

Ifeyinwa Ugochukwu is the chief executive officer of the Tony Elumelu Foundation. Prior to her new role, Ugochukwu served as the director of partnerships of the Tony Elumelu Foundation since November 2017. Before joining the foundation, she was the management consultant for the Enterprise Development Centre at the Pan-Atlantic University. She also sat on a Cape Town-based non-profit organisation focused on enhancing the economic welfare of women, called the Board of Women Empowerment and Children Relief in Africa. Ugochukwu holds a Bachelor of Law degree from the University of Wales, and a Post Graduate Degree in Business and Executive Coaching from the Integral Africa Institute, Cape Town. She is also an associate of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, Nigeria.

Dana Barsky

Chief Operating Officer and Head of Partnerships, Impact and Advisory Finance, Credit Suisse International

Dana Barsky is the Chief Operating Officer and Head of External Partnerships for the Impact Advisory and Finance (IAF) Department of Credit Suisse based in London. The IAF Department is responsible for setting the strategy as well as directing, coordinating and facilitating activities across the bank which leads to sustainable finance on behalf of the bank’s private wealth, institutional and corporate clients. The IAF Department reports directly to Tidjane Thiam, the CEO of Credit Suisse. Prior to joining the IAF Department, Ms. Barsky was an investment banker, focusing her career on mergers and acquisitions and has advised companies across a wide variety of industries – technology, consumer products, healthcare, industrial products, and retail – at Credit Suisse and Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette.

Jan-Willem Scheijgrond

Global Head of Government and Public Affairs, Royal Philips

Jan-Willem Scheijgrond heads up the global network within Philips that is responsible for the relations with governments and related stakeholders to address societal challenges in particular in the area of large scale healthcare transformations. He is also responsible for partnerships with partners such as the United Nations, GAVI, and the World Economic Forum. In that role he is focusing on partnerships that strengthen health systems in support of achieving universal health coverage. He is a board member of the Partnership for Maternal and Newborn Child Health and a member of the Global Finance Facility Investors Group./p>
