Antimicrobial resistance, or AMR, is one of the most pressing public health challenges today, threatening progress on everything from the Sustainable Development Goals to the aspiration of delivering universal health coverage by 2030.
Every year, AMR is directly responsible for 1.27 million global deaths and contributes to another 5 million deaths, according to the World Health Organization. In 2019, sub-Saharan Africa experienced the highest number of AMR-attributed deaths and without urgent action, the region is expected to bear the highest burden of the predicted 10 million annual deaths by 2050.
In the lead-up to the U.N. General Assembly High-Level Meeting on antimicrobial resistance, this event, hosted by Devex in partnership with GSK and Amref Health Africa, will explore challenges and barriers, and spotlight how local solutions can be scaled through multistakeholder partnerships in order to build the capacity and awareness needed to effectively respond to the AMR challenge on the African continent, including through a regional action group.
Discussions will also highlight how a One Health approach can help countries effectively respond to the AMR challenge by holistically addressing human, animal, and environmental health within the implementation of their national action plans.
