On the occasion of the 72nd United Nations General Assembly, Devex was pleased to partner with PATH to host a private discussion titled “From Healthy to Secure: The Power of Global Health to Drive Safety and Stability Worldwide.” The event took place at WeWork Bryant Park in New York City on Wednesday, September 20, and welcomed over 100 top executives and policymakers from development, government, civil society and the private sector.

The panel conversation focused on the critical but often overlooked link between global health and security; what must be done to strengthen our preparedness for infectious health threats; and how political, economic, and security leaders can work together to increase security and stability around the world.

Ambassador Birx is a world-renowned medical expert and leader in the field of HIV/AIDS. She oversees the implementation of the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief, as well as all U.S. Government engagement with the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria.

Margaret Hamburg

Chair, Joint Coordination Group, Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Initiative (CEPI)

Margaret Hamburg, an internationally recognized authority in medicine and public health, currently serves as Foreign Secretary, National Academy of Medicine. She has previously served as Commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration, was vice president/senior scientist at the Nuclear Threat Initiative, and served as a New York City Health Commissioner.

Ed Whiting

Director of Policy & Chief of Staff, Wellcome Trust

Ed Whiting worked in a number of Whitehall social and financial policy departments during his civil service career. He was most recently at 10 Downing Street as Deputy Principal Private Secretary to the Prime Minister, leading on public services and awarded an OBE for public service and services to 10 Downing Street in the June 2016 Queen's Birthday Honours list.
