The number of people suffering from acute food insecurity increased drastically between 2019 and 2023: from 135 million to 345 million across 79 countries. The conflict in Ukraine, the economic consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic, and the increasing impacts of climate change have pushed food prices to an all-time high and food systems to the brink.
In fragile and conflict-affected states, food systems are particularly vulnerable to shocks. In Yemen, for example, over half the population is food insecure and flash floods displaced more than 200,000 people in 2023, limiting agricultural yields and further threatening food security.
Cross-sector partnerships are essential for building resilient food systems in fragile and conflict-affected states, with the private sector in Yemen playing a key role by supplying about 85% of wheat imports in 2020. These partnerships bring together the expertise and resources of governments, the private sector, and civil society organizations to address the challenges that these food systems face.
Register now for a Devex event in Dubai on the sidelines of the 28th U.N. Climate Change Conference, or COP 28, in partnership with Hayel Saeed Anam (HSA) Group, to explore how cross-sector partnerships can build more resilient food systems in the face of urgent multidimensional challenges.
The event will be preceded by a networking breakfast where guests can connect with industry experts working to tackle food insecurity.
