About the Event

This event, hosted by Devex and the McKinsey Health Institute on the occasion of the 76th World Health Assembly in Geneva, will explore what’s needed to improve the lives of older people globally and deliver on the Decade of Healthy Ageing. The event will discuss how global health actors ranging from WHO and country governments, to civil society and investors, can help advance good health for all older people.

We are facing one of the most profound demographic shifts in human history. Today, most countries around the world are experiencing growth in both the size and the proportion of older people in their population. The number of older adults will more than double to an estimated 1.6 billion by mid-century. There are societal shifts that can harness this demographic transition as an opportunity, and ensure people live both longer and healthier lives. Among them are investing in innovation to drive age-friendly environments, combating agism and unleashing the power of all industries, including integrated and responsive health care systems and services. Yet many health systems — both in LMICs and beyond — are not prepared for the changing needs of an aging population.

Living longer doesn’t necessarily mean living better. While society has been successful in adding an average of 20 years of life expectancy since 1960, we have not been as successful in extending the span of healthy life. The McKinsey Health Institute recently surveyed more than 21,000 respondents aged 55+ across 21 countries to understand the health perceptions, perspectives and activities of older adults. The findings indicate that more must be done to ensure dignified and healthy aging for all, including a modern understanding of health that considers physical, social and spiritual health.
