A year ago, Barbadian Prime Minister Mia Mottley convened a high-level retreat in Bridgetown, Barbados, that resulted in the Bridgetown Initiative – a bold plan to overhaul the global financial system so that it can better respond to the needs and crises of today, particularly in the context of climate change, and redress some of the power imbalances embedded in the current system.
The plan has gained unexpected momentum and triggered movement on an overhaul of the Bretton Woods system that has been talked about for years. It will be at the heart of French President Emmanuel Macron's "Summit for a New Global Financing Pact" in late June.
